Civitella del Tronto

The fortress of Civitella del Tronto is one of the most impressive works of military engineering in Italy: it extends, in fact, for more than five meters in length on a rocky ridge.

All its luminous history is linked to the strategic position that has had, for several centuries, as a garrison of northern borders of various Naples kingdoms. The fort and the linked village received more sieges, but what mostly made history is the unlucky defense sustained against the Sardinian Piedmontese army in 1860/61, which ended with the surrender March 20, 1861, last Bourbon stronghold gave way to the rising of Italy.
